About Secrets of Survival and Sean

Secrets of Survival publishes practical preparedness guidance for ordinary households, alongside clearly labelled analysis of severe, unlikely, and fictional survival scenarios. The site has been online since 2002.

The current editor writes publicly as Sean, the Secretive Survivalist. Sean is a pseudonym, not a professional credential. It lets the editor remain private while taking public responsibility for what appears on this site.

What we are trying to do

Good preparedness should make a household calmer and more capable. It should not require pretending that every alarming event is imminent. We therefore separate three questions:

  1. How plausible is the scenario? A power cut, wildfire evacuation, winter storm, earthquake, nuclear emergency, and zombie outbreak do not belong in the same probability bucket.
  2. What are the consequences? A low-probability event can still deserve a proportionate plan when the consequences are extreme.
  3. Which actions help across several scenarios? Water, medication planning, communication, evacuation routes, financial resilience, and useful skills usually matter more than one exotic purchase.

We do cover frightening and apocalyptic subjects. When we do, the page should tell you whether a scenario is common, plausible but uncommon, highly speculative, or fictional. Fiction can be a useful thought experiment, but it must be labelled as fiction. Uncertainty is not an excuse to invent certainty.

Who is Sean?

Sean is the public pen name used by the current editor of Secrets of Survival. The name is intentionally separate from the editor’s legal identity. The editor has a longstanding personal interest in household preparedness, wilderness skills, food storage, self-reliance, privacy, and self-defence.

That background does not make Sean a doctor, engineer, emergency responder, lawyer, or product-testing laboratory. When specialist knowledge matters, the article should rely on attributable evidence, identify the limits of the guidance, and seek qualified review where the risk warrants it.

The point of the pseudonym is privacy—not borrowed authority. Readers should judge an article by the quality of its reasoning, sources, disclosures, and corrections rather than by an unverifiable biography.

How the site is edited now

New and substantially revised pages are expected to:

  • answer the reader’s main question early;
  • distinguish observed facts, reasonable inferences, uncertainty, and speculation;
  • link to the strongest useful evidence we can find;
  • state when advice varies by location, law, health condition, equipment, or skill;
  • say whether a recommended product was physically tested or only researched;
  • show a review note describing the work performed; and
  • correct meaningful errors openly.

Research and drafting may use software tools, including AI-assisted tools. An AI answer is never treated as evidence. Claims still need to be checked against source material, and the site remains responsible for what it publishes.

Historical articles and contributors

Secrets of Survival has a large archive created by many contributors over more than two decades. Historical bylines are retained where the old records support them. A byline on an older page does not imply that the contributor currently works with the site, endorses later edits, or reviewed the present version.

Parts of the archive predate the standards described here. Those pages are being audited and will be refreshed, merged, clearly qualified, removed from search, redirected, or retired according to their usefulness and risk. An old publication date is not a guarantee that a page has already received this review.
